Measles Exposure Alert: Public Health Officials Issue Warning for Three Upstate Locations
It's crucial to be informed about potential health risks, and recently, the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) announced public measles exposures in three locations. This news serves as a reminder of how quickly illnesses can spread and the importance of staying vigilant.
Here's what you need to know:
A person infected with measles visited several locations in the Upstate while contagious. The DPH has pinpointed specific times and locations where potential exposure occurred in late December:
- Nose Dive restaurant at 116 S. Main Street, Greenville, S.C., on Dec. 24 from 1:30 to 4:30 pm.
- Best Buy at 1125 Woodruff Road, Suite 1201, Greenville, S.C., on Dec. 24 from 3 to 6 p.m.
- The Spartanburg Library at 151 S. Church Street, Spartanburg, S.C., for the Solar Superstorms planetarium show on Dec. 27 from 3:15 to 6:30 p.m.
Important Note: The individual was unaware they were contagious during these visits. Health officials emphasize that there's no known risk beyond the specified dates and times.
What to Do If You Were Exposed:
The incubation period for measles is usually at least seven days. If you were at any of these locations during the specified times, and you're not immune to measles (either through vaccination or prior infection), the DPH urges you to contact your healthcare provider. Monitor yourself for symptoms through January 17th. Early symptoms often include a cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a mild to moderate fever, typically appearing within 7-12 days (but potentially up to 21 days) after exposure.
Vaccination is Key: Only one vaccinated person has been reported to have gotten sick. This highlights the effectiveness of vaccination in preventing the spread of measles.
But here's where it gets controversial... Measles is a highly contagious disease, and outbreaks can occur where vaccination rates are low. Do you think mandatory vaccinations should be enforced to protect public health? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
