This intriguing scenario unfolded for one Reddit user, known as "Tommyjones91," who thought he had acquired two conventional GeForce RTX 3080 Ti cards. However, after a closer inspection, he discovered that these were actually the rarer 20GB variants, which Windows initially failed to recognize due to the absence of the necessary drivers.
According to Tommyjones91, while the cards were capable of outputting video, they required a specific third-party patcher to install the appropriate drivers successfully. Upon checking with GPU-Z, he confirmed that the model was indeed a 20GB variant, and he was able to validate this by opening up the card itself. Notably, he found that using GeForce driver version 581.94 became possible through the patcher, which adds essential device IDs that the standard drivers overlook. This limitation means that these cards do not offer "plug and play" functionality, making it unwise to resell them to anyone expecting comprehensive driver support.
In his own words, Tommyjones91 recounted how the seller had claimed the cards were ordinary 3080 Ti models. The seller, who worked in IT and mentioned having engineering samples, stated he received these as a gift from a company, although he didn’t disclose which one. When Tommyjones91 brought the cards home and connected them, they displayed normally, resembling typical 3080 Ti cards—yet the drivers wouldn’t install until he ran into the patching issue.
The community has pointed out that such engineering samples are typically not intended for resale, and many companies are obligated to destroy these items post-testing. Previous instances of similar leaks have even shown labels indicating their restricted status, further emphasizing the mishap in this case.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 20GB engineering sample has emerged in the wild. Earlier in 2025, another Founders Edition card with the same specifications appeared on eBay, revealing the ongoing challenge of lacking official driver support without modifications.
For collectors, these samples represent a rare glimpse into the history of the Ampere architecture, but for everyday users, they can prove to be quite problematic.
